Hi,
My name is Bill Cohen. I am a Clinical Psychologist, Licensed in New Jersey. I was invited to write blogs for On The Borderline by Lauren Leigh, founder and coordinator of On The Borderline. I am in full time clinical practice, and work with children and young adults who have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.
I do Psychological examinations of children and young adults, ages 5-30 years of age. I write diagnostic evaluations for schools, other psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians and neurologists. I examine individuals with mild, moderate and severe mental problems and learning issues.
The field of psychology is so vast that one can only pick a small segment of the population, and do it well. When you see an advertisement from some professional with a list of things that they do, you can pretty much bet that they do not do any one of them very well.
To tell you a little more about me- I have been in practice for more than 40 years. I did all of my educational training in NYC. My masters and doctoral training, as well as psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytic work was done in New York. I am married (only once) for almost 50 years, Have 3 Grown Children who are all Licensed therapists. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. After we married. I was offered excellent internships at prisons and hospitals in N. J. We moved to the NW mountains of NJ, and are still here. My wife has an education degree from Hunter college, also in NYC. and is well respected competition photographer and graphic artist. She is also a loving grandmother to our 9 and 13 year old grandsons.
INTRODUCTION TO BPD.
What is BPD?
How does one get it?
Is it serious?
How do get out if it?
What are the best treatments?
I am going to make this, my first blog short, since BPD is one of the most diverse, confusing, and misdiagnosed disorders in the whole field of mental health. If you ask 20 people to explain it to you, depending on who you ask, you will get 30 explanations.. In future blogs, as my schedule permits, I am going to try to clarify and explain this disorder to you, keeping it as clear as I can and answer all questions as they come along. This is not a slam dunk set of how to fix it.. It will be much more intense and will take time. When I signed on for this project I knew that this was not going to be a short term 12 step project.
I promise that I will try my best for you all.. I thank Lauren for the invitation and I thank you for reading this blog
Wishing you all good health, happiness and feelings of fulfillment. I hope to talk to you soon
Bill

BPD is multifacited, I believe one of my 2 living parents may have this diagonis and it would have a better understanding of the conflicts I have seen in our relationship, being on and off many times thru my 58 years. Thank you for doing this blog.
